No Dance This Weekend!

In fact that will be true three times this month! This first two times it’s a natural result of our holding English dances on the first & third Sundays, and Contra dances on the second and fourth Saturdays. The Monday this notice drops will be the day after the first Sunday, and the next Saturday will be the first Saturday of the month, a week too soon for the Contra, which will happen on Saturday the 14th, with Tanya Merchant calling to the music of Star Thistle.

Sunday the 15th will be not just an English dance, but our annual Holiday Tea! This year we swapped the locations of our two English dances so we could hold this event at Roseville’s Masonic Lodge, with the superb Lise Dyckman calling to our own Quite Carried Away. Tea will be sipped (pinkie extension is optional), goodies devoured, and there will be chattage and talkery.

Then we’ll have another no-dance weekend due to the calendar, and the following Saturday, the 28th, the dance is also canceled, as just three days later is one of the biggest events in our calendar: the New Year’s Eve Contra! Starting at 8 PM, you can dance out 2024 with Dane Wallinga calling to the music of the Rhythm Raptors (Rodney Miller, Jeff Spero, and TJ Crow)!

December is a big month!

COVID Safety Information:

The ECD Committee has reconsidered our COVID policy:

Vaccination

COVID vaccination and boosters are highly recommended but not required.

Masks

For English Country Dances at the Masonic Lodge facility (1st Sunday), good quality, well-fitting masks are recommended but not required on the dance floor and other indoor spaces.

For English Dances at the YLI facility (3rd Sunday) – All dancers must wear a high-quality mask, such as N95, KN95, or KF94, when in the dance hall.  Masks with exhaust vents are not acceptable because they do not protect other dancers. No surgical or cloth face coverings are allowed.

Questions are periodically raised about the difference in mask requirements between the two facilities. The reason for it is that COVID has not gone away, and still poses a significant risk to many, especially in the colder months. This approach gives everyone at least one venue where they can dance.

Bruce Hamilton is a well-respected, thoughtful, and energetic teacher of English and Scottish dancing with 45 years’ experience. He has launched dance classes, trained teachers, coached performing groups, and adjudicated festivals.

A retired research scientist, Bruce is always looking for new ways to understand and present ideas for the dancer. Whenever he presents workshops, he weaves many conceptual threads besides dance technique and choreography into his lessons. Musicality, sociability, and physiology are his current favorites. People often say they come away with a different way to experience and think about dance. Occasionally he holds a weekend teachers’ class that also draws high praise. He continues to run a bi-weekly English dance class in the Bay Area. In the recent past, he was the president of the Country Dance and Song Society. With invitations to teach at many festivals and dance camps each year, he has taught workshops all around the United States and in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Australia.

Lise M. Dyckman has been teaching and calling English Country Dance (and Contra Dance) for decades, in Philadelphia, New York City, California’s Bay Area region and beyond, and is known for her clear and concise calling, musicality, humor, interest in dance history and attention to welcoming community.

Alisa Dodson has been English Country dancing since 1980 and calling since 1990.  She was involved in BACDS dance activities in the Bay Area for many years before moving to the midwest and then east to Massachusetts.  She continued calling dances wherever she lived and was involved in the Amherst, MA ECD for about eight years before moving back to California in 2013.  Alisa now lives in the old gold mining town of Murphys.

They now live in Sacramento where they regularly attend, teach and host a variety of dance events including English Country Dance.

Gary Sandler‘s first exposure to dance was when he learned ballroom style in college. Decades later, his son’s involvement in a youth dance program introduced him to International Folk Dance. Over the years, he’s learned a variety of dance styles and developed a particular love of English Country Dance. Gary likes helping dancers get more fun out of their dancing through safe and comfortable hand-holds, practical demonstrations, and clear direct instruction.  Gary likes to vary the dance format for English Country Dances, shifting from lines to circles to squares. Through his local International Folk Dance group’s weekly dance, Gary calls and teaches Romanian, Israeli, Balkan, and Scottish dances in addition to English Country.

Caller: Gary Thomas
Music: Quite Carried Away
Sound: David Wright and Sue Jones
Date: Sunday, October 1st (1st Sunday Roseville)

Dancing has been a passion of Gary Thomas for as long as he can remember. From a beginning as a square dancer and tap dancer, he added other dance forms to his repertoire, and was able to put this knowledge to good use as a choreographer for musical theater. In 1977, on moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Scottish Country Dancing became his “new” craze, and English Country Dancing soon followed. After moving to California, he joined the ranks of English Dance callers and, on occasion, played piano for classes. He continues to teach Scottish Country Dance, and will periodically throw in Vintage Dance, which includes Regency, Victorian, and Ragtime era ballroom dancing.
