CANCELLED, DUE TO WEATHER!!

Very heavy weather is expected, and for the safety of the caller and dancers, the February 4th dance has been cancelled.

Caller: Alisa Dodson
Music: Quite Carried Away
Sound: David Wright and Sue Jones
Date: Sunday, February 4th (1st Sunday Roseville)

Alisa has been English Country dancing since 1980 and calling since 1990.  She was involved in BACDS dance activities in the Bay Area for many years before moving to the midwest and then east to Massachusetts.  She continued calling dances wherever she lived and was involved in the Amherst, MA ECD for about eight years before moving back to California in 2013.  Alisa now lives in the old gold mining town of Murphys, and we’ve been very lucky to have her call for us over the years. She’s now winding down her calling activities so she’ll get to dance more!

Six musicians and friends under the direction of David Wright and Sue Jones. Just give them English Country Dance music to play, and they’re Quite Carried Away!

The members of QCA are (clockwise from upper right): Martin Lodahl (viola da gamba), Susan Jones (English concertina), Jane Kostka (whistle), David Wright (violin and mandolin), Arlene Jamar (piano), and Dick Holdstock (octave mandolin and tenor banjo).

Quite Carried Away is the home band for the English Country Dances.

New (old) location! Old-timers will remember that for years we danced at the Masonic Lodge at 235 Vernon Street in downtown Roseville. Beginning this month, our First Sunday dance will be there again! And now, there’s a large parking structure behind the building!

As usual, beginners are welcome. If you are bringing, or know of any, first-timers, please urge them to come at 1:30 for the introductory workshop that precedes the dance. No partners are needed, so come by yourself or with friends or with family. Events are accessible to people with disabilities.

It’s always nice when folks bring snacks to share–please bring items that don’t require plates or utensils. Please bring your own water bottles.

COVID Safety Information:

The ECD Committee has reconsidered our COVID policy:

Vaccination

COVID vaccination and boosters are highly recommended but not required.

Masks

For English Country Dances at the Masonic Lodge facility (1st Sunday), good quality, well-fitting masks are recommended but not required on the dance floor and other indoor spaces.

For English Dances at the YLI facility (3rd Sunday) – All dancers must wear a high-quality mask, such as N95, KN95, or KF94, when in the dance hall.  Masks with exhaust vents are not acceptable because they do not protect other dancers. No surgical or cloth face coverings are allowed.

Questions are periodically raised about the difference in mask requirements between the two facilities. The reason for it is that COVID has not gone away, and still poses a significant risk to many, especially in the colder months. This approach gives everyone at least one venue where they can dance.

Contra Dance, 4th Saturday!

Caller: Bowen Lee
Music: Las Semillas (David Wright, Sue Jones, and Marilyn Cooper)
Sound: Ken Britten
Date: Saturday, January 27th, 2024 (fourth Saturday)
Time: 7 :00–10:00 pm, with newcomer’s orientation at 6:30 pm
Location: Coloma Community Center, 4623 T St, Sacramento, CA
Cost: $12 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check); If cost is the only thing preventing you being being there, please talk to the greeters at the door.

Bowen Lee has been dancing most of her life, with folkdance, ballet, tap, jazz, and African dance in her repertoire. And she just likes to party down. She’s been a Zumba instructor, children’s dance teacher, and tai chi instructor. She became a contraholic about ten years ago, and started calling just as the pandemic shut the dance hall down. But she’s calling dances now to connect dancers with great music in a community that celebrates the joy of contra.

Alas, your humble webmaster has failed you here. Las Semillas is a new band of experienced talents, and we have no photo. David Wright and Sue Jones are well known to us all, from their membership in Magic Reelism and Persons in Black, as well as decades of service to SCDS and as sound technicians. Marilyn Cooper has played for Contra in Houston and Austin, TX, and on our own stage in the Community Band. You will not be disappointed!!

Newcomer’s orientation is offered at 6:40 pm, perfect for people who have not contra danced before, or who could use a refresher. Experienced dancers are invited to partner with newcomers during the orientation and early dances to help integrate them into the community. No partners are needed, so come by yourself or with friends or with family. Events are accessible to people with disabilities. Potluck snacks are available at the break, and we encourage you to bring something to share.

The SCDS Board has voted to modify Covid requirements. The new policy is as follows:

Covid vaccination and boosters are highly recommended but not required for attending Contra dances. Good quality, well-fitting masks are recommended but not required on the dance floor and other indoor spaces.

Kelsey is a “contraholic,” and can often be found any given weekend dancing or calling a contra dance. Her inspiration for calling comes from Nils Fredland, whose callers’ workshop at American Week (BACDS) in 2012 spurred her down the caller’s path. When calling, she considers herself a conduit between the dancers and the band, helping to channel the  joy of the musicians’ music through flowing, interesting dances.

English Country Dance, Third Sunday!

Caller: David Newitt
Music: Quite Carried Away
Sound: Sue Jones and David Wright
Date: Sunday, December 17th (3rd Sunday)
Time: 2:00-6:00 pm
Location: Young Ladies Institute (YLI), 1400 27th St, Sacramento, CA 95816
Cost: $12 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check)

David Newitt arrived at Swarthmore College in the fall of 1976 and was shocked to discover that this pillar of higher education had a two year physical education requirement. Faced with the alternatives of being smashed to pieces on the football field and going to Folk and Square Dancing, the choice was clear. He’s been dancing ever since.

Starting with international folk dancing, he was soon dragged into the local Scottish Country Dance group, the college morris and rapper sword team, and, when it started in 1978, the Kingsessing Morris team of Philadelphia. He came to Berkeley in 1982 to work on a Ph.D.in physics and to do country and display dancing. Since the dissolution of the One Shot Morris Team due to MIBS (Morris Induced Baby Syndrome), he has concentrated on country dancing in the Bay Area, teaching and playing music for regular Scottish and English dances and calling contras and the occasional square dance.

When not dancing, David takes pictures of people’s insides, doing research in Magnetic Resonance Imaging at UCSF, specializing in body parts that start with B. David is one of the most accomplished country dance teachers in the Bay Area, known particularly for his mastery of dance geography and his ability to make complicated dances seem simple. David’s priorities can be guessed from the final acknowledgment in his dissertation, in which he thanks, “All my friends in various dance and music groups without whose continuing support I would undoubtedly have finished this dissertation several years earlier.”

Contra Dance, Second Saturday!

Caller: Susan Petrick
Music: Sactown Revelers (Kathrine Gardner, Cynthia Llano, Allen Barnes)
Date: Saturday, December 9th, 2023 (second Saturday)
Time: 7:00–10:00 pm, with newcomer’s orientation at 6:30 pm
Location: Coloma Community Center, 4623 T St, Sacramento, CA
Cost: $12 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check); If cost is the only thing preventing you being there, please talk to the greeters at the door.

Susan started teaching and calling for contra dances in 2000, and teaching couple dances, including waltz, cross-step waltz, and hambo, shortly thereafter. She tours throughout the country calling for dance weekends and festivals. Susan lives in Mountain View and has become a regional treasure with national prominence. She is well-known for her clear teaching, efficient guidance, and expert pacing, making even complex dances accessible to all.

Rockin’ vintage tunes for your contra dancing pleasure! Kathrine Gardner discovered her life’s purpose playing some of the first Sacramento contras with Cynthia Llano and David Faulkner in the mid 1980s, then went on to further develop her expressive and driving fiddle talents playing in the Bay Area and elsewhere with such noted groups as the Contra Bandits before returning to Sacramento. Local Cynthia Llano, renowned for her musicianship and great backup playing on guitar, mandolin and old-time piano, is a member of the Faulkner Family band (with her husband David Faulkner and their son Joaquin), who play for the third-Fridays dance at the Coloma Grange. Talib Huff calls that dance. Allen Barnes of Davis is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who has played a wide variety of traditional folk music styles for over 50 years. In the 1980s he played with the Possum Trot String Band, whose approach to Southern old time music inspired many, including Kathrine. His mandolin accompaniment in the Revelers kicks up the excitement level for the dancers.
